The two-step has been in the United States since the middle of the 19th century or longer. It is danced to 4/4 music. There are strong accents on 1 & 3; you can hear the bass drum “boom” on these beats. The basic timing is quick, quick, slow, slow. A “quick” represents 1 beat of music and a “slow” represents 2 beats of music. Since a basic, Q Q S S, takes 6 beats of music, 2 basics take 3 bars of music. Another way to express the timing is: steps are taken on beats 1, 2, 3, and 5. Counting “1, 2, 3, 5” will net the same result as counting “quick, quick, slow, slow”. An “ outside” turn in the two-step is a “ natural” turn and an “ inside” turn is a reverse turn. Frame is slightly more “ relaxed” than a ballroom frame but not as “curved” as a Latin frame.
